Elephant Graduates Thrive in Ithumba: A Heartwarming Reunion and New Beginnings

In a heartwarming journey of growth and reunion, three remarkable elephants bid farewell to the Nairobi Nursery to embark on a new chapter in the vast expanses of the Ithumba Reintegration Unit in Tsavo East National Park.

Roho, Neshashi, and Oldepe, known for their resilience and dedication, braved the challenges of a severe drought in 2022 to prepare themselves for this momentous transition.

As the long-awaited rains finally graced Tsavo, signaling the perfect time for their departure, the trio, led by Neshashi, embarked on their journey.

Despite initial hesitation from Roho, who eventually gained confidence with encouragement from their Keepers, they set off on their journey to Ithumba, arriving amidst the lush greenery of the rejuvenated landscape.

Upon arrival, the elephants were greeted by familiar faces, including Larro, Mukkoka, Naboishu, and Musiara, sparking joyous reunions and new connections.

Larro, in particular, embraced Roho, her former little charge, with warmth and affection while Neshashi and Oldepe navigated the experience of meeting these beloved elephants for the first time.

In a thoughtful approach, the Keepers provided the newcomers with a spacious enclosure to gradually acclimate to their new surroundings.

This transition was especially vital for Neshashi and Oldepe, who required additional time to adjust to their new environment compared to Roho, who had grown up under human care since infancy.

Amidst trunk hugs and playful antics at the midday mud bath, the bond between the newcomers and their new family blossomed.

With the setting sun, Larro led the graduates to their designated home in ‘Class One,’ where they enjoyed a serene night surrounded by familiar and newfound companions, marking the beginning of a promising journey of growth and belonging in Ithumba.
